As well as the supply and fitting of new memorials, Alberti, Lupton & Co offer a range of services regarding their cleaning and renovation. As our before and after photos here show, we are usually able to restore headstones that are damaged and worn, making them look like they are new.
Over time stormy weather, moss, ivy, tree sap, falling leaves and grass cuttings can impact on the condition of memorials. Sadly there are occasions when they may be vandalised as well.
General cleaning is nearly always done at the graveside. The materials used depend on what the headstone is made of. As a family run business that has been in existence for over 110 years, we have extensive knowledge of the best ways to clean different types of headstone. This is reflected in our rates, which are higher than general grave care companies. However you can be sure that you are paying for a high quality and trustworthy service.
During Covid 19 there has been a rise in the number of small businesses offering grave care services at competitive rates compared to those charged by established masons. We would urge you to be very cautious about these, especially if you are approached in cemeteries or via social media. Before parting with your money, check out their reviews and how long they have been in existence. Don’t be afraid to ask either about what products they will be using to do the job.
If you decide to have a go at cleaning a headstone yourself, be very wary of using cheap products bought online. There is a risk if the wrong product is used, there will be an adverse reaction that causes irreversible damage.
Extensive restoration of memorials is usually done at our workshop. Even though it can often be done at the graveside, we remain mindful of cemetery visitors wanting peace and quiet when paying their respects to loved ones. Memorials are jet washed to remove most of the dirt, then chemicals and abrasives are used to remove staining. We then work on the lettering if required. This usually means re-gilding if gold leaf, replacing if lead, or painting if carved.
When re-fixing renovated headstones, we do need to ensure they meet modern safety standards. Legislation from 2012 requires them to be able to withstand a force of 70 kilograms without toppling over. Although councils are not enforcing this retrospectively, any memorials they come across that are unsafe will be laid flat. The chances are if your headstone is more than twenty years old it will require a new ground anchor to meet the current standards. These are fitted to the NAMM (National Association of Memorial Masons) code of practice by accredited fixers. We offer an anchoring service to bring your memorial up to modern standards even if you require no additional cleaning or renovation.
In addition to one off cleaning and renovations, Alberti, Lupton & Co offers a memorial care service, which involves us visiting the grave three times a year. On each visit we will clean the memorial, inspect it and report back on any problems. This service is only available to customers who have either purchased a new memorial or had one recently renovated by us.
Please contact us on 0161 681 1272 or via the online form if you would like to discuss the cleaning or renovation of a memorial.
