At Alberti Lupton & Co we regularly receive enquiries regarding angel gravestones, which come in a range of shapes and sizes and can be made from various materials.

An angel praying reflects the deceased’s faith, while one with outstretched wings pointing upwards shows the passage to heaven. The trumpet adds extra religious significance as this is referring to the Day of Judgement.

angel gravestonesDespite angels being associated with Christianity, angel gravestones do not necessarily indicate religious belief. It is not uncommon for secular families to have them on their memorials as an angel can be associated with a guiding light, for example. An angel weeping at the grave may be an indication of the untimely death of a loved one. One of our designs is an angel wrapped around a heart, showing the deceased remains in the hearts of their loved ones.

For children’s memorials cherubs are common, signifying innocence and everlasting love. Cherubs look like a child but have wings, and as with adult memorials they are a reflection of the journey to heaven.

Angels may be an integral part of or moulded to conventional headstones. Although memorials come in different colours, angels are always white. Angels can be carved from a number of materials including marble, granite and Portland stone. You may wish to consider angels as part of gravestone ornamentation. Small carved angels are a nice addition to a kerbset, while there is also the option to have them etched on to the main headstone.
