For generations the only indication of children’s memorials in cemeteries were those with a cherub. The cherub is a child with wings and often point upwards, indicating the journey to heaven. Nowadays, in a more secular society, local authorities are mindful that cemeteries needn’t just be places of mourning, but somewhere that life can be celebrated. It is now common to see headstones in the shape of teddy bears, football shirts, cartoon characters or toys.
If you prefer a conventional shaped headstone, it is possible to have imagery of favourite cartoon characters or photo plaque of your child added on. Advances in cutting and laser imaging techniques have given so much more scope for bespoke memorials that are perfect tributes. Children’s memorials can be supplemented with kerb sets and coloured chippings which provide space for vases and other ornamentation. The headstone can also be brightened up by coloured lettering rather than the usual grey or gold. There are numerous examples of inscriptions on child headstones around the web and sometimes less can be more. This can especially be the case on certain shaped memorials, but something as short and simple as “Our Sunshine Boy/Girl” can say everything that is needed. Time is a healer and after a period of mourning, visits to the cemetery can be to remember precious moments that you shared with your child.
