Unique Headstones
Advances in technology mean that there is great scope nowadays for individual memorials. Modern cutting techniques allow for materials to be cut far more easily into different shapes, rather the square or rectangular style of the conventional headstone. Cemetery rules have been considerably relaxed by many local authorities, and memorials in the shape of flowers, books and motorbikes, amongst many other things, can now be seen.
Here are just a small selection of our unique headstones.
One example of the more unusual designs we at Alberti Lupton & Co have supplied for our customers is one in the shape of a dolphin. We are often asked to provide memorials in the shape of books too, and once provided a memorial with two ring shaped pieces on the top for the grave of a customer’s parents. One customer, Carmen, once approached us with an unusual request but we were able to help. Headstone imaging is another area where there is a much wider choice for individual designs. Laser etching and sandblasting allow for more choice than just angels and other religious figures. Football club crests are a popular addition but cars, a favourite scenic location and musical instruments have all been known to be added. Another way that headstones can be given a unique appearance is by the addition of mosaic images, made from glass or ceramic materials.
Bespoke memorials are particularly popular for marking the graves of children and babies. Headstones shaped as stars and teddy bears are common, with imaging of favourite television characters or toys being a popular addition. There is a move away from mourning the loss of a loved one to celebrating their life, and this is reflected in the nature of many memorials today.
When it comes to designing a bespoke memorial for our customers, it starts with a blank piece of paper. For a memorial that is reflective of your loved ones personality, we can use our expertise to guide you on what will and won’t work, as well as ensuring it complies local authority regulations which do differ across Greater Manchester. If your memorial is for a churchyard however, then you must be prepared to accept far greater limitations on your design. Many churches do not even allow images.
Bespoke individually designed memorials do require more work and we are unlikely to get them ready as quickly as the more conventional headstones.
