Rossendale Borough Council operates four cemeteries. Plots are available to purchase for Church of England, Roman Catholic and Nonconformist burials in all four Rossendale cemeteries. Haslingden and Rawtenstall have Muslim sections. The borough has no cremation facilities, with residents being directed to the neighbouring boroughs of Burnley, Hyndburn and Rochdale.

Registration Scheme

Rossendale Borough Council registered with BRAMM (British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons). Only BRAMM registered masons can work in the borough’s cemeteries.  Alberti, Lupton & Co. is a BRAMM registered company with our own BRAMM registered fixers. As such we are permitted to work in Rossendale cemeteries.

Permitted Sizes

All four of Rossendale’s cemeteries only allow lawn type grave memorials. They should be no more than 1200mm high by 900mm  wide (4ft by 3ft). They must be a minimum of 75mm thick (3 inches) and the total depth no more than 450mm (18 inches)

Kerb Sets

Rossendale Borough Council no longer allows kerb sets, slabs or chippings in any of its cemeteries.

Additional Notes

Rossendale Borough Council does not allow cars in its cemeteries except in designated areas. Cycling is prohibited. The council regularly carry out sample inspections of memorials and will enforce grave owners to rectify any cases where there is a breach of cemetery regulations. 

Application Procedure

Rosendale Borough Council encourage all applications to be made in writing on forms provided. Their rules and regulations , which can be downloaded at their website state the following in respect of this:-

All notices of interment and applications for grave spaces, construction of vaults, brick graves and the erection of monuments shall be given in writing on the forms provided by the Council. Any order or instructions given by telephone will be received at the sole risk of the person giving such orders or instructions, and the Council will not be responsible for any misunderstanding which may arise with regard to such orders or instructions, unless they are immediately confirmed in writing in the manner prescribed by the regulations.
